Today is a special occasion, being exactly a year since I set up and used my Twitter account for the very first time. I was always very hesitant to use social media – especially with all of the seemingly endless toxicity I’d heard about in the gaming community – but I’m pleased to say that my experience has, for the vast majority of the past year, been very positive.

I’ve been very fortunate to have stumbled upon a positive, encouraging and inclusive community of like-minded geeks, gamers and writers. My intention when I started was to find a way to move forward with gaming-related writing and – though it’s still early days for that from a professional point of view – I think I’ve progressed even further than I could have hoped, certainly from the viewpoint of the volume of content I’ve been able to write and share publicly. Just on this blog alone, I’ve written for close to 300 days without a break; I’ve also had my work featured on a number of other websites too (see my Portfolio post for details of my non-blog work!).

I’ve consistently tried to push outside my comfort zone, both in terms of word count (I’ve tried not to waffle so much where it’s not needed, though that’s clearly still something I need practice with!) and subject matter (covering hardware for example, or checking out movies and board games as well as video games). It’s made me into a much more confident writer and I’ve also learned not to be such a perfectionist; the daily schedule, though often punishing and difficult to keep up with, has forced me to publish when my work is good enough, rather than strive for perfection and end up posting nothing at all.

Writing aside, I’ve made lots of new friends via Twitter and have had countless conversations about games and other topics; I’m blown away that, as of right now, I have more than 7000 followers. I never imagined I’d be able to reach such a high number – certainly not within a year.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who follows me for your endless support, interesting – and often hilarious – conversations and, of course, friendship. I couldn’t do any of this without you. Here’s to the next twelve months!

Enjoyed what you’ve read? Want to support my blog? There’s no pressure of course, but every penny helps to keep this site running, as I earn no income from my writing here. If you did want to support the site and my writing, you can do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal. Any donations are truly appreciated, but so is the fact that you took the time to read my articles. Thank you so much!

Help support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
