I’m not quite sure how Bart Bonte’s games have passed me by until now, but Green has opened my eyes to what an incredibly inventive designer he is – and it’s no wonder that his games seem to have such an eager, devoted audience.
Part of the Bonte Games ‘Colour’ series of games, Green is a puzzle game themed around – you guessed it – the colour green.
Each stage presents players with a unique, visually minimalistic puzzle, with a frankly bewildering variety in terms of what you’ll need to do to proceed. It’s all incredibly pleasing and tactile, with the inventiveness only sometimes becoming a little obtuse and frustrating to work out (there’s a reason, for example, why a Google search for the game will show one of the most frequently entered search terms as ‘Bart Bonte Green Level 14’).
However, the majority of the 50 puzzles to complete in Green make you feel clever in solving them, rather than annoyed or stupid; as well as this, the visually minimalist aesthetic is hugely appealing. The lovely soundtrack completes the experience too.
Mobile games often have bad reputation, but Green plays to the strengths of the platform – being tactile, bite sized stages that can be picked up and played for shorter or longer sessions wherever appropriate. There’s no replay value here, however; once a puzzle is solved, there’s no point playing it again, as there’s no variance in the way it’s solved.
Importantly for an ad supported mobile game, interruptions are infrequent; you’ll only see an ad when requesting a hint, so it’s very unobtrusive. You can also pay a one off cost to remove ads, in any case.
I’m very impressed with Green overall though; it’s a captivating experience. If Green is representative of Bonte’s other games, I can’t wait to check those out too.
