I really enjoyed volume one of Snow Angels, even if it did feel a little abrupt by the end of its far-too-short run.
All of that enjoyment had dissipated by the middle of volume 2’s run, however. The mystery was dragged out too long considering how many issues were left to go – and meanwhile, questions were still piling up even as reveals were coming in the last few issues.
I was concerned that there wasn’t enough time left to adequately wrap everything up and unfortunately, that’s definitely the case with this final issue. Though our main characters do get a resolution of sorts, a wordless fight scene takes up far too much valuable screen time – leaving us with an unsatisfying ending that may well leave readers scratching their heads.
It really is a shame, because Jock’s art has been strong throughout – and Jeff Lemire’s writing, when it was focused on the core concept and not struggling to drag the Lost-esque mystery out – was definitely compelling. Yet the ending is a bit deflating, with not enough detail and far too much ambiguity to be satisfactory. A major disappointment, in my opinion.
