Teenager Brielle Brooks has been noticing weird stuff recently. Weird stuff including… vampires?
Her mother is protective and somewhat secretive, so Brielle doesn’t know who she is or why she may well be attuned to seeking out creatures of the night.
When Brielle and her mother are attacked in the open, it’s time for Brielle to finally learn the truth about her heritage. Yet when her mother is still slow to open up, Brielle takes it upon herself to go hunting…with unexpected results.
Bloodline: Daughter of Blade #1 was an unexpectedly excellent read, with a great pace and good grasp of character for everyone we’re introduced to. Brielle and her friends are believable teenagers with teachers that seem to unfairly target them for ire and unnecessary punishment, which feels incredibly relatable to me.
Hey, I’m old but I was a teenager once too – right?
Though the premise does have somewhat of a Buffy-esque feel, the short, sharp shocks of violence and the name-dropping of famous Marvel characters does give it a more intriguing spin.
The teen drama is well balanced with the supernatural elements for the most part and the art is superb throughout.
Having sunk quite a bit of time into video game Midnight Suns recently, I’ve become quite enamoured with Blade again – so it’s great to see him return to comics and used in a way that’s different to the norm.
Though he only cameos here, we can expect him to be much more involved in the story and with Brianna as the series continues.
And I shall definitely be back for seconds when the next issue arrives.
