The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back for a second series of Saturday Morning Adventures from IDW!
For the uninitiated, the Saturday Morning Adventures comics are intended to ape the style and tone of the 80s cartoons we middle aged geeks grew up with; the first series was a multi-part GI Joe story (and was excellent), but there’s also a currently-running Dungeons and Dragons series too.
Though the GI Joe and Dungeons and Dragons series told one continuous story, the first TMNT series was instead a series of one shot tales, featuring daft, high concept stories that perfectly mimic the silliness of the 80s cartoons, as well as their one-and-done episode structure.
However, for this second series, the format switches to the more familiar continuous story.
In this first issue, the Rat King – thanks to a familiar canister accident – loses the ability to communicate with and command an army of rats.
However, he gains the ability to communicate with our mutated warrior reptiles instead – and recruits them to steal equipment that’ll help restore his power over rodents.
It’s a pretty slick affair, with bold, strikingly colourful art and a nicely self deprecating script.
It’s a worthy continuation of the Saturday Morning Adventures series – and it’s a great deal of fun.
It’s a nicely nostalgic throwback to when comics and cartoons really were just for kids – and if you’re a Turtles fan, it’s a comic that’s well worth picking up.
