Trinity can’t seem to catch a break; after a difficult childhood, she seems to also be struggling as an adult. All of the men she encounters seem to treat her like crap too.

However, left alone in the desert one night, she stumbled upon a relic that seems destined to change her life forever.

Despite a narrative that seems intent to pair Trinity with almost comically irredeemable assholes, the first issue of Embers is off to a pretty good start.

We get a good grasp of who the headstrong Trinity is, even though her judgement when it comes to men seems seriously off – and we also get an intriguing, Indiana Jones-esque relic mystery that takes the story in an unforeseen direction by the issue’s end.

Camron Johnson’s artwork is fantastic; incredibly detailed and with a focus on realism, the historical and mythological sequences are a great contrast from the more contemporary elements of the story.

So I’m definitely intrigued by Embers #1 – and looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

Many thanks to the writer and creator of Embers, Kevin Knox, for providing me with a copy of the first issue to review. You can check out Embers at the Indie Comics Zone.
