The minimalist cover of new indie anthology comic FWACATA! #1 is an accurate depiction of how the comic feels to read; each tale unfolds at a breakneck speed, landing quite the direct hit each time.

Basically, as ably demonstrated by that cover image, it pulls no punches.

The Wolverine-style opening story, featuring a no-nonsense hero named Meathook, sets the tone nicely for what’s to come – and also gives us a character whose story you’ll definitely want to see continuing.

The second story – Rez: The Right View – feels a little disjointed and it did take me a while to absorb what was going on, but despite this, I still found it to be a pretty compelling read – and unquestionably sets up a unique character whose ‘adventures’ I’d like to see more of.

Finally, Sexually Transmitted Demons deploys hyper-specific splashes of colour to deliver an adult action thriller featuring a demon hunter whose prey is somewhat unconventional in their methods, shall we say. The title says it all; it’s a wild ride in more ways than one.

FWACATA! – which is, as creator Juan Navarro explains, a sort of onomatopoeic, Cuban-Spanish word to describe when someone is hit, smacks their head on something or falls over – is a thrill-a-minute ride that doesn’t let up.

With it being the work of a single creator – and unrestricted by a publisher or editor – it feels edgy and unbound in a way that recalls the early days of VHS.

By that, I mean the era when gory action and horror would come packaged in plastic and magnetic tape, skirting – if not outright leaping over – the boundaries of taste.

The first issue of FWACATA! can be found on Kickstarter right now, in the midst of its crowdfunding campaign. If this kind of hardcore action and violence is your bag, then jump on board and help it to come to fruition here – with a variety of options for variant editions of the comic at different pledge levels.

You won’t regret it.
