Released on Steam in 2018, now that Frog Detective has made it to the Xbox (and Game Pass) in a version that compiles all three of the amphibious investigator’s cases, I thought it was a good time to revisit the first in the series.
First things first: don’t be expecting a long and convoluted mystery that’ll give the grey matter a good workout.
Rather, The Haunted Island is a short narrative adventure with a wittily written script, tons of charm – including some absolutely fabulous, dancing anthropomorphic animals – and even a few surprises after the credits roll.

As the titular detective, you’re tasked with solving a spooky mystery on a tropical island; you’ll do this by wandering around in first person, talking to different animals and sometimes getting an object for them in order to get one in return.
You’ll do this in order to progress through your investigation – and, even if you needed to resort to trial and error as to who to speak to next, solving the entire mystery probably wouldn’t take much longer than half an hour or so.
The brevity is pretty irrelevant though, because this mystery doesn’t outstay its welcome.

Right from the start and even past the credits rolling, it delivers plenty of laughs with funny characters, amusing lines and daft situations.
You might even get to see a dance competition, if you’re lucky.
In case it’s not obvious, I absolutely adored The Haunted Island from the moment it started – and, though I did wish there was more to it, there kind of is.
Yes, there are two more Frog Detective games – and I’m very much looking forward to playing both and reviewing them too!
