Though only eight pages long, The Outlands: Child of Wrath does a great job of world building as well as presenting a compelling set up for us to want to revisit the city of Dios.

The story paints a vivid picture of a supposedly safe, domed city, which protects its citizens from the dangers of the world beyond.

Yet those in power rule with an iron fist, unwilling to tolerate any dissent or challenges to the status quo with anything less than the harshest of punishments – all the while justifying their callousness with pseudo-religious piousness.

When one citizen dares to speak up and is punished for it, a chain of events is set up that will prove to be fruitful ground for the drama to continue, in any chapters of the story that follow.

The script is nicely written by Tyler Edwards, who really has done a great job of setting up a dystopian world in very few pages and with minimal fuss.

The clarity in the artwork – by Valentin Quinones – also helps with this; large, clear and uncluttered panels impart a surprising amount of information effortlessly.

It’s well worth checking out – and let’s hope that more chapters are on the way sooner, rather than later.

Many thanks to creator Tyler Edwards for providing me with a digital copy of The Outlands: Child of Wrath for review purposes.
