The mismatched group of sentient mushrooms need to make their way through the Forest of Bacca.

Without Basan Natta’s help, will they survive the ghostly hordes in the woods?

And what lies for them beyond the trees, if they get that far?

Once more, JM Ringuet takes readers on a unique journey, with this second issue of Fung Gi delivering some great plot developments and surprisingly explicit violence, which is nevertheless tempered by the fact that it involves bloodless mushroom people.

I really do enjoy the naturalistic style of Ringuet’s comic, which contrasts with the weird bipedal mushrooms and insect beasts of burden in Fung Gi’s setting.

It really feels like there’s much more going on in this world beyond the journey we accompany the main characters on; the feeling of this being a much larger world than we get to see directly is helped with numerous maps along the way as well.

The main cast are all distinct in both their looks and character, each of them playing off each other nicely as they encounter fresh dangers and opportunities.

As was the case with the first issue, Fung Gi #2 is a great read that progresses its main plot at a decent pace and even leaves us poor readers with quite the cliffhanger; hopefully it won’t be too long before Fung Gi #3 emerges.

You can buy Fung Gi #2 directly from Scout Comics, in either physical or digital form here – with a choice of multiple covers too.

Many thanks to JM Ringuet for providing me with a digital copy of Fung Gi #2 for review purposes.
