It’s been a while, but our favourite hapless wannabe slasher, The Denim Devil, is back.
The poor guy just can’t get a break; caught in front of a murder tableau, he’s forced to flee the scene when the cops get a little too trigger happy.
And then the freaky stuff can really begin, as we head towards a surprising showdown in the next issue.
The Denim Devil has been a fantastic exercise in subverting expectations; though the sex = death rulebook was quickly torn up in the beginning, it seems that it may well be back to the guidelines, in a way, here.
The Denim Devil himself is a fairly subversive creation too, often evoking sympathy as he continues to fail his way through his plans, while someone else is far more successfully carrying out grim murders in the town of Vanglerton.
Writer Zach Carter and artist Jared Yanez continue to impress with this penultimate chapter of The Denim Devil; not only is it still a superb pastiche on slasher fiction tropes, it still manages to pack in scenes of genuine terror, horror and gore alongside those comedic elements.
I’m definitely looking forward to the story’s conclusion; though it seems like there’s quite a few loose ends to tie up, I have faith in Carter and Yanez to deliver with the climax of the series.
There are numerous ways to purchase The Denim Devil #1 – either digitally or in very limited physical form – check out the comic’s website here: thedenimdevil.com. Issue 2 and 3 are now available too; you can check all three issues out at the November Street Press website here. Many thanks to writer Zach Carter for providing me with a copy of The Denim Devil #4 for review purposes.
