Teenage girl band Alien She-Devils have no idea that they’ve been brought together to bring about the apocalypse, despite the fact that they seem to be followed around by ghosts.
In fact, those ghosts tend to make up the bulk of their fanbase at their gigs; without them getting a bigger audience, how are they supposed to end all life as we know it?
Enter the Morpheus-esque figure of Berry, who’s been tasked with getting them on track. The trouble is, each one of the trio has been conditioned to reject and mistrust anyone outside their group, so he’s definitely going to have his work cut out for him.
Writer Danny Harrell (who doubles as the comic’s colorist, infusing Robert Ahmad’s nicely stylised pencils and inks with a bold, bright aesthetic) has crafted a pretty unique take on the ‘selling your soul to the devil for fame and fortune’ trope here; mostly due to the fact that the girls are unware that they’ve been set up in this way.
Their tragic ‘normal’ lives are a sad contrast to their musical experiences, though in fairness their gigs don’t seem to turn out much better.
There’s a surprisingly dark undercurrent to the story, which thickly lays on the reasons, or rather the need, for these girls to truly rebel.
By the time the girls are trying to help a fan in need at a larger gig, filled with truly awful people, I was fully invested in their story and even more so once the shocking climax, then cliffhanger, fell into place.
It’s a great read, with a compelling setup, which feels pretty unpredictable by the end of the first issue.
