A woman is killed mid-presentation, her throat slit in front of most of the townspeople.

Though a young boy is responsible, the killing makes no sense. Why would a child do such a thing?

When infamous Marshal Holt investigates, he finds that something has happened to the boy, but what’s more, there have been numerous other, out-of-character murders across the territory.

Reluctantly, Holt is going to find out just what’s going on.

This old Western mystery gets off on the right foot, setting up a blood soaked mystery that’s immediately intriguing.

Scott Snyder’s writing is fantastic, his dialogue and plot dripping with atmosphere, which is helped no end by Dan Panosian’s art and colours.

Panosian chooses an awfully blood red palette, soaking the background with splashes of crimson even outside of the few scenes of shockingly vivid violence.

His framing of the action sequences add a great deal of tension and a dynamic feel to each scene; it’s a really impressive first issue overall.

So there’s no doubt I’ll be along for the ride with Marshal Holt, as he delves deeper into the deadly goings on in this oppressive, atmospheric and somewhat claustrophobic Western mystery.
