The 1986 Transformers was a pivotal movie for kids of the 80s, featuring traumatic scenes that easily rivalled the upsetting live action scenes in films such as The Never Ending Story.

So of course the reboot Transformers is going to go there; just look at the cover for Transformers #6.

In this issue, the Decepticons have called up on the fearsome, multi-Constructicon Transformer, Devastator, who is very true to his name.

Decimating the Autobots, he sets his sights on Optimus Prime.

Can we really be losing the heroic Optimus Prime during the first story arc of the rebooted comic?

For us middle aged Transformers fans who always had The Touch, this issue is an absolute dream come true.

It effortlessly toys with your emotions while recreating that scene, right down to the framing and the way the characters speak and stand around our hero.

And yet…no, I won’t go there. Spoilers.

So anyway, the action is as bombastic and dynamic as usual, with Daniel Warren Johnson’s love of wrestling even shining through in at least one panel, and some hilarious text in the back of some scenes, with my favourite being YOU KNOW THE SONG.

And yep, damn right I do. It was in my head as I read the entire sequence; it’s a masterful piece of subliminal suggestion.

This first story arc proves, as if it still needed to be proven after so many years, that Transformers is far more than just a jumped up, fireworks display of a toy advert (thanks to Simon Pegg’s Tim in Spaced for that one).

It’s got real heart, thrilling action and robotic heroes that you genuinely care about.

More importantly, it’s got the touch. It’s got the power.
