Trouble is brewing at the higher echelons of the Decepticon ranks, as Starscream and Soundwave come to blows in a struggle for leadership.
Meanwhile, the Autobots are struggling with their own issues, though, as befits their softer nature, it’s guilt and angst, over actions taken and opportunities missed, that haunt our heroes.
Daniel Warren Johnson’s script really nails the feel of early Generation One Transformers, albeit with a much harder, more brutal edge than the original cartoon could have.
Artist Jorge Corona does a great job with hyper detailed art that makes you feel every piece of wire and metal being hit, torn asunder and blown up; his work isn’t too different from Johnson’s own art. So much so that I was surprised that Daniel Warren Johnson hadn’t drawn this issue!
It’s great, really, really good stuff and the perfect series to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the robots in disguise. It retains a look and, roughly, the setting that will be familiar to old school Transformers fans, yet still feels incredibly modern too; so far, the series has yet to put a foot wrong.
