Our protagonist, the journalist Kate Marsden, has at last come face to face with the man who nearly drowned her all those years ago: the unhinged killer, Darwin Collier. Yet he’s something much more than he used to be, and he’s got other people on his trail, too. Then there’s the actual Gillman himself, with scientists in pursuit of him, as he makes his way to the cave where Collier has Kate trapped. The stage is set for a showdown featuring lots of different people, but who, if anyone, will walk out alive?

Writers Dan Watters and Ram V, crafted a layered and interesting tale with Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives; it’s far from the straightforward, B-movie style monster movie you may have expected in advance. A tale of obsession, revenge and the destructive, violent tendencies of mankind, it’s been an exciting, yet thoughtful ride.

This fourth issue ties up as many loose ends as it can, and the Gillman himself plays quite a decisive role, at last emerging from the shadows; though we haven’t seen much of him over the course of the series, his presence has definitely been felt, and he’s been used incredibly well. It does mean that whenever he has appeared, it’s been that much more impactful.

Watters and Ram V could quite easily have headed into familiar water with the story, but definitely subverted expectations with this all too brief series. Let’s hope that we see more of the Gillman, sooner rather than later.
