One of the most iconic titles to emerge from the early arcade boom, Frogger hasn’t managed to maintain its popularity or recognition in the same way that games such as Pac-Man or Space Invaders have.
Partly, that’s because it struggled with terrible or just plain misguided sequels in the post 8-bit era, but the first game remains an absolute classic, and it’s fantastic even as an Atari 2600 title.
For the uninitiated, Frogger sees you cast as a frog determined to cross a very busy road, then a particularly hazardous river, in order to make it to the safety of your lily pads.

Though it’s subject to quite a bit of flickering, it’s impressive just how many moving parts and distinct elements, even colours, Frogger’s Atari 2600 port has.
It’s really responsive too, very playable even with the original, rather stiff Atari joystick; in fact, the responsiveness of the Atari 7800’s gamepad works against it, because you’ll often unintentionally move twice and cost yourself one of your precious lives, so I’d highly recommend sticking with the joystick, personally.
Whatever you use to play, Frogger is well worth your time; it’s no wonder that games such as Crossy Road have proven so popular, sticking closely to the addictive, basic formula that was originally created here.
As always, I must note that it plays perfectly well on the Atari 2600+, so if you do have the modern console, you can rest assured that Frogger definitely works!
