Stan Sakai’s anthropomorphic rabbit, Miyamoto Usagi, has a long history of crossing over with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and in keeping with this comic being a close reproduction of the style and content of the 80s TMNT cartoon, he’s known here as Usagi Yojimbo (which is the name of Sakai’s long running comic featuring the bunny ronin), just as he was in the animated series.
In this one off special, the Turtles help their heroic, honourable rabbit friend get back to his own dimension, but it’s immediately apparent that something is wrong; shadow creatures, led by a mysterious villain, have taken over the world, leaving it up to the TMNT to team up with the rabbit to save his home.
It’s a great deal of fun, and with it being a Saturday Morning Adventures comic, it’s something that fans of all ages can read, too. The visual style is bold and colourful, being very evocative of the classic cartoon show, and the script is light, breezy and silly; again, just like the 80s series.
It’s at once fresh and nostalgic, and it’s great to see the turtles teaming up with Sakai’s hero again, in a more family friendly way than prior comic book-based team ups have been.
