Minecraft Dungeons is an addictive, very simple to pick-up-and-play dungeon crawler. It feels somewhat like a slightly spruced up and modernised Gauntlet, and handily copes with up to four players, locally or online, playing through its charming voxel worlds together.

The arcade version, known simply as Minecraft Dungeons Arcade, simplifies the gameplay even further, but instead of discovering new equipment, characters or abilities in-game, these can be scanned in when you play, using cards.

These cards are dispensed to players when they start playing; one card per credit. Though this sounds like the worst kind of micro transaction rubbish, it actually provides an incredibly addictive and compelling aspect of the arcade game: finding and experimenting with new cards.

Of course, the more you play, the more cards you can collect and use. The arcade version of the game really does feel like a throwback to the likes of the aforementioned Gauntlet, particularly when tackled alongside three other players.

It’s a really fun game, with a lovely big screen (showcasing visuals pretty much the same as the home version of Minecraft Dungeons) and a strikingly designed, massive cabinet to boot.

There’s a dearth of actual games in arcades these days, with most floor space in many arcades taken up by prize or ticket reward machines; though Minecraft Dungeons Arcade doesn’t provide the deepest experience, you wouldn’t expect it to. It perfectly distils the dungeon crawling action for arcade players, and with the numerous sets of cards to collect and use, it even gives players a pretty big incentive to keep coming back for more too.
