The second story arc of the Skybound Transformers series climaxes in this issue, which also marks the first anniversary of the rebooted series.
It’s all out, wall to wall action as Optimus Prime and the Autobots try to rescue captured comrades and sever the link between Cybertron and Earth, with the aim of returning the mechanical planet to its rightful place in the universe. Yet things aren’t as clear cut as good vs evil, or right and wrong, any more, as even Optimus Prime is about to find out.
It’s another fantastic chapter of the ongoing saga, and one which really does change the way that we’re going to view characters going forward. There are some really tough decisions to be made, and more than one Autobot may not emerge from this story unscathed.
Though the writing is still on point (Daniel Warren Johnson is as dependable and ever, delivering a few stunning moments here), the art sometimes gets a little muddled, with a few panels that feel a little too busy. It’s a shame, because Jorge Corona’s art usually has excellent storytelling clarity regardless of what’s happening, but it just falls short in a few panels here.
That aside, this remains a triumphant reboot of Transformers, taking things back to basics, while still offering plenty of shocks and surprises for old school Transformers fans.
