With the announcement of a new card game, Centipede Blast, that’s based on the classic arcade (and console) video game, it reminded me that I hadn’t finished the Centipede comic book series.
Despite the fact that the comic itself was a weirdly timed adaptation (considering that the video game first released in 1981, and the first issue of the comic book series was published in 2017, and no one seemed to be clamouring for more Centipede), the first issue was great.
A post apocalyptic story in which the eponymous creature has already destroyed the world, we join the somewhat tragic Dale, as he seeks revenge on the Centipede for taking, well, everything from him.
In this issue, Dale formulates a plan to take care of the Centipede once and for all, but despite early success, the Centipede isn’t going to go down easily.
One thing I didn’t expect is that there’s a love story amongst the flashbacks, and it’s nicely handled, as well as being completely different to what you may expect.
It’s certainly an unusual twist for a comic based on a positively ancient, though excellent, arcade shoot ’em up, and I’m definitely keen to see how everything plays out in the next issue and beyond.
