This third volume of Street Fighter Classic sees Ryu training with the mystical Yoga Master, Dhalsim, while on his quest to avenge his murdered master, and encountering other powerful fighters too. Meanwhile, Chun Li and Cammy are progressing in their mission to uncover the dark secrets behind the Shadaloo Syndicate’s Doll Agents. With Cammy herself having been freed of her brainwashing as one of the deadly Doll Agents, the stakes couldn’t be higher, or more personal.
If you’re already on board with Street Fighter Classic at this point, the third volume is an essential read. It takes readers deeper into the stories behind the iconic, one-on-one fighting game, and does so with a great deal of artistic flair.
Though, as I always stress, the stories themselves are pretty cheesy and function as somewhat campy soap opera-style tales, Street Fighter fans are well served by the lore here, and the art is always stunning. Drawing upon the foundations laid by Capcom’s character artists, these comics are almost certainly a great example of style over substance, but who cares when the style is this good?
I have a real soft spot for the Street Fighter games, and I genuinely enjoy these comic book adaptations too. UDON have such a great grasp on what makes the stories and characters so appealing, and their passion for the video games shows on every page.
