After the initial run of Street Fighter comics (collected as Street Fighter Classic) ended with the Street Fighter Tournament itself coming to an end, and a winner being declared, it felt as if the whole saga was done and dusted, up to a point.
Of course, the video games themselves continued, and brought new characters to the series too, so naturally UDON have returned to once more chronicle the exploits of everyone’s favourite world warriors.
I must admit, I got really confused about the order of the volumes of UDON’s comics once I was done with Street Fighter Classic, and I ended up reading the wrong one first, being incredibly confused, then going back to this one. It turns out I’ve still missed a few volumes in between, and it feels like a real missed opportunity for UDON to not clearly list a reading order in their books.
Anyway, rant over; if you thought the Classic series went to some properly bizarre places, wait until you read Super Street Fighter, which primarily sets up Ryu and his young protégé, Sakura, being tempted by the dark power of the Satsui No Hado, and Guile investigating the mysterious Secret Society, a fairly self explanatorily named, very powerful and ancient organisation.
It’s filled with the usual UDON artistic flair, though there’s a much cartoonier, more comic book and less anime feel to the art style this time around. Regardless, it’s gorgeous, as you’d expect, and in terms of the writing, it’s just as silly and enjoyable as ever.
The mix of spy thriller, martial arts movie and out-and-out soap opera is always fun, and it’s a unique style and formula that UDON, alongside game developer Capcom, seem to have really perfected.
It’s a very unashamedly 90s style of comic, shorn of the faux edginess and grittiness that defined the decade; bright, colourful and style over substance, but great fun nonetheless.
