With Night Mask having been brutally murdered in the infamous, die-cut bullet hole adorned, issue 5, The Protectors are mourning the loss of their team mate, with some taking the tragedy harder than others. Can they get a respite from Mr. Monday and his Steel Army for long enough to peacefully bury their fallen comrade?
It really seems that this development in the story has brought out the best in writer RA Jones and artist Tom Derenick, both of whom turn in some really strong work here, to follow on from the surprisingly excellent previous issue.
There’s still weird quirks of characterization; for example, several of The Protectors, as well as people in their orbit, act in a weirdly insensitive way. The writing does still have a few bizarre quirks here and there, in addition to those moments.
Yet this was, on the whole, a well handled comic dealing with loss in a way that was, perhaps, becoming a trend after the mainstream attention that The Death of Superman had attracted some months earlier in 1993.
