With so many years of fantastic Street Fighter comics under their belt, UDON Entertainment also produced an excellent series based on Capcom’s popular, monster-based fighting game, Darkstalkers. Finding a way to bring the two series and casts of characters together reasonably organically in Street Fighter Unlimited, it didn’t take long for the titanic clash to take place.
It’s a pretty enjoyable, if rather throwaway, story, with the usual gorgeous art we’ve come to expect from UDON. The pairings of certain Street Fighter characters with those from Darkstalkers, on both sides, as well as the battles that ensue, lead to some great team ups and fights, though it does result in a fairly reduced character roster from each franchise.
There’s a decent continuation and wrapping up of threads from the Darkstalkers series, as well as a few minor developments for the ongoing Street Fighter story too (and we even get to see Violent Ken as well!).
Though Street Fighter Unlimited felt a bit underwhelming to me, I had more fun with Street Fighter vs Darkstalkers, which takes itself even less seriously than the average Street Fighter comic. The cover gallery reveals some absolutely stunning movie homage posters, which I adored – the Rikuo tribute to Creature from the Black Lagoon was a highlight for me, but they’re all fantastic.
Is it essential reading for fans of either franchise, or fans of both? Not really, but it’s fun, and the cover gallery alone makes it a worthy addition to the library of any fan of UDON’s or Capcom’s, work.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
