It’s a near universal truth that there are certain moments in our lives where all of us wish we could have made a different choice. Sometimes these are small, maybe unremarkable and unremembered by anyone else; other times, these may be huge, obviously life changing events. Sometimes they change our lives for the better, but often the reason they stay with us, haunt us even, is that these events have had a negative impact on who and where we are in the present.

Memoirs From the 20th Century #1 (part 1 of 5) introduces us to Maddy, a woman in her early 40s who’s unhappy with the way her life has turned out. Given the chance to go back to 1999, she takes it, and decides to make a change that she believes will set her up for a brighter future.

Kevin Learn writes and illustrates Memoirs From the 20th Century, and does so with a great deal of panache. The opening sequence, taking place in 1999, is full of fantastic period details – one thing that really stood out was the inclusion of lots of clever pastiches of movie and album covers from the decade,  featuring cats in place of humans; even better, this is smartly woven into the story.

It also helps that the comic feels somewhat like a slice of life comic, or an indie film, from the 90s; even the art style and composition of each panel has a similar aesthetic to the media of the period.

In short, this first issue is very well constructed by Learn, and it’s even more impressive that he’s solely responsible for the comic, from a creative point of view. I can’t wait to see how Maddy’s story plays out, and with the story already having taken a leftfield turn or two over the course of this first issue, I have no idea where we’re headed.

You can buy the comic directly from publisher Blood Moon Comics here. Many thanks to Kevin Learn for providing me with a copy of Memoirs From the 20th Century #1 for review.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
