After a disappointing few issues, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine #6 boldly goes where the series hasn’t gone before, with an anthology comic featuring three short stories.
First up is Field Trip, which sees disaster strike one of the station’s Runabouts, which loses control while returning Keiko O’Brien’s class to Deep Space Nine. With time running out to find the wormhole, help arrives from an unlikely source.
The second story is Pickpocket, which sees Quark and Bashir trying to track down a cunning thief, enlisting some assistance from the regulars who haunt the station’s bar.
Finally, we have Program 359, in which Dax and Bashir have concerns about Sisko’s state of mind, as they uncover something concerning in a holosuite.
Though each story barely has time to breathe here, the fact that they’re set up and resolved so economically, while still hitting some interesting character beats, is pretty impressive.
There’s a couple of moments that really don’t work here (particularly in Pickpocket), but on the whole it’s an enjoyably easy and fast paced read.
An anthology issue, with various creative teams, is certainly an unusual choice for a series composed, generally, of one or two issue stories, but it’s a refreshing change nonetheless, and allows for some characters who don’t usually get much screentime to take the spotlight.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
