Settling on an archipelago after being displaced by mysterious humanoid creatures known as ‘Phantoms’, the Vvenda people send volunteers known as Bannermen to their ancestral land, in order to perform a sacred ritual as the Guardian of Light.

Sending just one Bannerman at a time to their former homeland – to minimise loss on what can be a deadly mission – the newest Guardian of Light, Ah’etta, sets off after the previous volunteer failed.

Ah’etta is about to discover the secrets behind the mysterious whispers from the mainland, and may just uncover the truth behind the Phantoms themselves in the process.

There’s an epic feel to Jackson Konyango’s Phantoms of the Lake, which features a unique and detailed culture as the setting of its story. Though I found it a little impenetrable at first, the plot does coalesce and become clearer by the end of the story, and the artwork – also by Konyango – is beautiful, vibrantly colorful and filled with sublime design right from the opening page.

It’s a great story, with phenomenal world-building, and one which definitely rewards persistence. If, like me, you’re confused at the outset, trust that Konyango is taking you on a unique journey that will make sense by the time you reach its moving climax.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Help support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
