Creator Gil Murillo’s Heirs of Ashuradō continues with this second chapter, in which the village of anthropomorphic animals comes under attack from pirates from space. Tetsu’s search for his missing step sister Rini is paused as the interlopers demand valuables, leading to a violent situation that soon spirals out of control.
As I mentioned in my review of the first issue, Murillo’s black and white artwork is absolutely stunning, and once again the pseudo-Ancient Japanese setting, paired with anthropomorphic characters, reminded me somewhat of Stan Sakai’s brilliant Usagi Yojimbo; of course the approach here is of a more realistic style overall, with the addition of sci-fi elements too.
I do have to confess that I was lost in a few places during the action scenes; the finely detailed style did cause me a bit of confusion in a few panels, as to what was actually going on. However, overall I still enjoyed the unique vibe and incredible aesthetic of Heirs of Ashuradō.

Many thanks to Gil Murillo for drawing my attention to – and providing a digital copy of – Heirs of Ashuradō.
Gil had previously asked me to mention that “Tiny Power Comics also produces an Indie Comic Anthology that is always accepting submissions“.
Regarding Heirs of Ashuradō, Gil has asked me to stress that “Readers can keep up on Facebook & Twitter, GilMurillo.blogspot.com – and of course our home at TinyPowerComics.com!”
