What on Earth were Acclaim/Valiant thinking, only releasing Turok comics on a quarterly schedule back in 1997? Thanks to Acclaim’s smash hit Nintendo 64 games, Turok had perhaps the biggest and best brand recognition of any character featured in their comics line, so it seems like absolute madness that they wouldn’t take advantage of that as much as possible.

Not only that, but the comics they were releasing were essentially a series of one-shots in terms of their names and the fact that they were all #1 issues; however, they do closely follow on from each other, somewhat confusingly.

In Turok: Redpath, the still-new inheritor of the Turok lineage, Joshua Fireseed, is still getting used to being a dinosaur hunting hero. However, he has to settle in quickly, as there’s a terrifying, potentially supernatural killer on the loose, with a close connection between the victims and Joshua’s best friend, Barry Hackowitcz.

Turok: Redpath #1 was a comic I hadn’t heard of before, and I certainly wasn’t aware of Acclaim’s weird Turok publishing strategy before I picked it up, in my latest delve into the back issue boxes at Vanguard Comics.

It’s a bit of a strange story; though Turok’s stories are interdimensional and do feature more than just dinosaurs, I didn’t expect this story to have such an uninteresting resolution, quite frankly. There seemed to be something a bit more involving going on than was actually the case by the end, and it all seems like it’s trying way too hard to be edgy.

By this stage, the Turok games had given the character a reputation for gore, but even so it translates awkwardly into this story.

Still, it was a mildly entertaining and well illustrated read considering it cost me so little; I have to say though, that it hasn’t made me want to read any more Turok comics any time soon. Perhaps that’s unfair, given that the character has a seriously long and varied history; no doubt at some point my path will cross with the Native American hero once more.
