Ah, Quantum! How I’ve missed you. Not only was the eleventh issue of the bi-monthly British anthology comic somewhat delayed, but my local WH Smith have decided, in their infinite wisdom, not to stock it any more.

One of the great joys of getting my hands on a new issue of Quantum is being able to walk into an actual, physical shop and buy it; this time around, I had to do some hunting for it. Was it worth the wait? Mostly, yes!

First up in this issue is the always reliable Major Rakhana, which has been an undeniable strong point for the anthology since its very first issue. The story of a British military officer defending Victoria’s intergalactic Commonwealth in an alternate past, it’s not afraid to paint our supposed hero in an unflattering light and reveal her unflatteringly imperialist actions for what they are. Despite this, it maintains a campy tone, with some genuinely clever moments and surprising twists. Plus, a question regarding the drinking of tea, which arose in one panel, was cheekily waved away in the next, in-story; a very amusing touch.

John Higgins brings his sci-fi horror Razorjack to the Weird West world of Dave West’s WesterNoir (yes, that is a lot of ‘west’, isn’t it?). Though much vaunted and even granted the cover spotlight, I found it quite confusing to follow, especially with the repeated usage of a difficult-to-read red font on a black background. It looks great, but I was left baffled by the story itself.

The excellent Katie Cunningham writes the other new addition to the anthology, with the first part of Space Banshee Exorcist. Ably assisted by Danielle Wiebe, who provides the strip with beautiful artwork, Cunningham gives us a monster-slaying sci-fi with an intriguing, immortal protagonist.

Speaking of high powered protagonists, The Clockwork Cavalier’s latest swashbuckling adventure comes to a close in Quantum #11, with the eponymous, noble (and artificial) defender of justice confronting a truly dastardly villain in the clouds.

Let’s hope that the wait for the next issue of Quantum isn’t such a long one. And fingers crossed I can actually find it when it’s out, too!
