Look at that shiny rainbow foil cover, with sparkly fireworks everywhere! It’s definitely a 90s comic, isn’t it?

The Adventures of Superman #505 was released in 1993, in the wake of Superman’s triumphant return. A return from what, you may ask? From death itself, no less.

Even if you weren’t keeping up with comics in the early 90s, you couldn’t fail to have known about DC’s Death of Superman event. It was huge, even making it to the mainstream news. Fans and non-fans alike were aghast at the notion that one of the world’s very first superheroes was being killed off.

The Death of Superman was followed by Funeral for a Friend, then Reign of the Supermen, in which four new Superman wannabes emerged to fill the void left by the Last Son of Krypton; initially, there were teases that at least one or more of these new heroes could be Superman himself, but the original hero was resurrected after around a year of teases.

The Adventures of Superman #505 features a Superman so freshly reintroduced that he still hasn’t worked out how to explain the imminent return of Clark Kent, also thought dead in the same battle against Doomsday, which claimed Superman’s life.

It’s an interesting story, from one of the most exciting and important storylines in the history of the main character and his world. There’s some weirdness that you might not have the proper context for (a few of the characters from Reign of the Supermen appear here, for example, and they may not be particularly familiar to modern readers; neither is the red-headed, younger, bearded Lex Luthor, for that matter), but it’s still a fairly accessible read despite this.

Of course, it’s still part of a much larger, ongoing storyline, so don’t expect much to be resolved or for this to feel anything like a standalone story!

Big shout out to Gav at Southampton Comics, who had The Adventures of Superman #505 on the wall, where its shiny foil cover was impossible to resist!
