Chuck, his dog Addie and their fellow Orphans are heading north, still looking for a way to escape their doomed world. Chuck finally learns that he can trust someone with the secret, imaginary world that he uses as an escape from the desolation and terror of reality, but they’re about to come up against their biggest, and very real, threat yet.

This final issue of Book 1 of Orphans of the Impact Winter is another fantastic read; as always, it’s full of tense, exciting action, sometimes filtered through the technicolour, retro-futuristic sci-fi of Chuck’s imagination.

The contrast between the real world and Chuck’s fantasy has always been a clever aspect of Orphans of the Impact Winter, and it’s used to great effect once more in this fifth issue.

When co-creator Ross Carlisle got in touch to send me this issue, I joked that I was ready to get my heart broken again; this comic certainly doesn’t disappoint in that regard. Though there’s going to be a well earned break between book 1 and 2, given the devastating cliffhanger we’re left on here, the next issue can’t arrive soon enough.

Issue 5 of Orphans of the Impact Winter will be available from April 9th, and you’ll be able to buy it digitally, alongside all of the previous issues, from Amazon.
