The final issue of Turtles of Grayskull is here, and the climax sees the culprit behind the knots in time definitively revealed, but can the Turtles, the Eternians and their respective nemeses stop a rampaging, mutagen-powered He-Man?
When Turtles of Grayskull began, its story beginning in media res felt like a neat touch, with the characters from each franchise having already been well acquainted and teaming up before the series even began. However, over the subsequent issues, it became clear that the story was pretty messy, with far too many characters, settings, time periods and threads all over the place. It was a convoluted mess, to put it lightly.
This fourth issue should really be tying everything up with a nice, extended action sequence, but it spends a ridiculous amount of time on exposition that really shouldn’t have been left until this late in the proceedings. While we do get some big, crunchy action, it’s still far too dialogue heavy and reliant on characters explaining what’s going on, either to each other or to the reader. It’s not well handled at all, to put it bluntly.
One area in which it absolutely succeeds, and which has been the case from day one, is with Freddie E. Williams II’s incredible artwork, along with Andrew Dalhouse’s gorgeous colouring. The character design and the level of detail is stunning, so it’s a real shame that the story over complicates itself and under delivers narratively.
Will we see more of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Eternia, or He-Man and friends on Earth alongside the heroes in a half shell? I certainly hope so, but next time it’d be wise to not get too wrapped up in overly convoluted, temporal and multiversal shenanigans.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
