Regular readers of my comic reviews will know that I love delving into bargain boxes at shops and conventions, finding oddities for as cheap as I possibly can.
Battle Tide #1, which I picked up from a stall at Portsmouth Comic-Con at the weekend (I’d give them a shout out, but I didn’t get their business name and it wasn’t on the stall) for just 30p, is definitely a cheap and cheerful, weird and wonderful comic.
It bills itself as ‘tag team wrestling, intergalactic style’, but this first issue is a classic ‘get the team together’ setup, introducing us to plenty of obscure characters (who mostly originated in Marvel UK titles, with Battle Tide also being created and published by Marvel’s UK arm), as well as a few more familiar ones such as Wolverine and Psylocke.
We don’t initially see who or what is gathering all of these fearsome personalities (not all of them fit into the category of ‘superhero’, or even ‘hero’), but we are given some clues as to the fact that they seem extraterrestrial in origin.
It’s an interesting setup, and it allows for some great fight scenes, all beautifully drawn by none other than classic Transformers artist, Geoff Senior, with Louise Cassell providing vibrant colours; it’s especially impressive for its time. With the ever reliable Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning on script duties (seriously, how long have those two been around?), this is a really fun comic despite (or because of, perhaps) a cast of real oddballs.
Thankfully, I managed to snag each issue of this 4 part series for 30p each, so I’ll be able to enjoy the full story; watch this space for reviews of the rest of the series!
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
