The early 90s were a fantastic time for licensed comics, and even though Dark Horse weren’t the only publisher handling film and TV properties in comic book form, they felt streets ahead of the competition, particularly when it came to more mature franchises.
So it made sense when they launched a new anthology series, known simply as ‘Dark Horse Comics’, that they’d lead with a few stories from their licensed titles. So in this opening issue, we have the first part of stories featuring both Predator (no surprise there, given the front cover!) and RoboCop, along with two original Dark Horse stories: Time Cop (which of course, became a movie, after starting life as a comic) and Chris Claremont’s Renegade.
Interestingly, the Predator story is completely dialogue free, and kicks off a tale of a young African hunter making his first kill, only to find that something has found its way to his tribe while he was away.
Time Cop sees Walker stopping a criminal from gaining untold wealth by heading into the past, only to cause further problems with the timestream along the way.
Renegade is typical Claremont; an overly wordy opening chapter of a story which sees a world sought out for exploitation by a nefarious group, with a young woman not about to sit idly by and let her world be bullied into giving up its natural resources.
Finally, RoboCop has our cyborg taking on looters, and potentially getting into more trouble than he bargained for.
The four tales in here are all very well produced, and each has really solid artwork too. The only letdown is Claremont’s Renegade story, which takes an inordinate amount of time to get to the point and then doesn’t really go anywhere anyway. It’s not exactly a surprise, but still disappointing.

Otherwise, each other story starts off well, and it’s definitely the case that I’ll be keen to check out the second issue too. Also, check out that amazing Dave Dorman gatefold cover. Incredible stuff, and worth the price of admission alone!
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
