Despite my copy of Night Breed #2 having a damaged cover, the interior is perfectly fine, just so you’re aware. It feels right to continue reviewing the Marvel’s run of Clive Barker’s Night Breed during Pride Month, especially as the openly gay creator filled his world with a huge amount of blatantly queer subtext. As an aside: can it even be called subtext if it’s that obvious?

In any case, we join the story in an unusual place in issue #2, with our apparent protagonist dead, and the blame for a spare of horrific murders planted squarely on him. Yet it’s not long before Boone’s body disappears, and the real murderer can’t seem to shake his addiction to killing, as Lori, Boone’s partner, finds out. And then the ‘monsters’ make their presence known…

A lot of ground is covered in Night Breed #2; perhaps a little too much. The pace does mean that the storytelling becomes a bit rushed, and we hurtle between locations and plot beats without time to truly take in what’s going on. The world of the monsters, Midian, for example, is introduced in a bit of a whirlwind sequence; we could definitely do with slowing down and taking in a bit more detail than the movie’s budget allowed, especially as the artwork and creature design (some of the latter borrowed from the film’s visuals) is so strong.

Though it’s cool to recount the original story with some expansion, I’m actually really looking forward to getting it out of the way and continuing the Night Breed saga beyond the film; this comic series lasted for 25 issues, with only the first four adapting the movie itself, before heading into uncharted territory. Let’s see how the next few issues wrap things up, and how the series continues the story of Boone, Midian and the Night Breed, which we were denied onscreen.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
