Benjamin Percy did a fantastic job with Predator Versus Wolverine, but his Predator Versus Black Panther was a huge disappointment. So when Predator Versus Spider-Man was announced, with Percy on scripting duties for the third Yautja vs Marvel Superhero crossover, I wasn’t sure what to expect.
Thankfully, at least on the evidence of this first issue, it seems that Percy may have delivered the strongest Predator crossover of the three so far. In this opening chapter, there’s a brutal serial killer on the loose in New York; bodies are being found skinned, with missing parts, suggesting that trophies are being claimed from each corpse. Peter Parker is covertly investigating, and it’s not long before there’s a citywide blackout, allowing the Predator to kick his ultra-violent rampage into overdrive.
Though it’s not particularly OTT by Predator standards, the gore in this issue really took me aback considering it’s essentially a Spider-Man comic. Marcelo Ferreira pulls no punches at all with the art, which shows some seriously sick stuff right in your face. This Predator is absolutely twisted, and it takes the Yautja even deeper into horror territory than it’s perhaps ever been.
The final sequence brings a character into the story who, frankly, just had to be involved. That ends this issue with the story showing a great deal of promise, some unbelievably shocking gore and a new Yautja who’d be a good contender for the villain in an ultra-bloody slasher flick. It’s strong stuff, in more ways than one, and it’s already streets ahead of the previous Predator/Marvel crossover.
