When I read Predator Versus Spider-Man #1, I was genuinely taken aback at just how explicitly gory it was. Of course, it being a Predator story, that shouldn’t have been a surprise; however, Marvel’s Predator comics so far, while hardly neutered, haven’t been anywhere close to as bloody as several of the movies have been. The series which preceded this one, Predator Versus Black Panther, was a dull affair, so I can’t say I was expecting much from Predator Versus Spider-Man.

I guess I was lulled into a false sense of security, because this second issue continues the shocking carnage that began in the first issue.

It’s even more reminiscent of a horror movie, as the cover shows, with Mary Jane trapped on a subway train, trying to hide from a Predator who likes to skin his innocent, defenseless prey.

Though this goes against the established Yautja code of honour, fear not; that is part of the story here, so it’s not as if writer Benjamin Percy is misunderstanding the nature of the Predators. Far from it, in fact, as the cliffhanger to this very eventful issue proves.

We also get to spend some time with Kraven the Hunter, who is very keen on tracking down the cruel, alien serial killer who’s terrorising New York during a citywide blackout.

Marcelo Ferreira’s artwork is perfect at bringing the shockingly explicit action to life too; so far, this is one Predator/superhero crossover you won’t want to miss.
