The first ever Predator comic series comes to an end in this fourth issue, as Schaefer decides he needs assistance from New York’s gangs to take down the Predators that have invaded the city, rather than involve those ball-busting superiors of his at the NYPD.

This is a very 80s action movie style conclusion, with a hint of The Dark Knight Returns in how our supposed hero teams up with his enemies to fight off a bigger threat. Yet everything here properly defies logic, even for a ‘switch your brain off’ style ending. Schaefer comes across as a total dick too, at one point celebrating the demise of a certain character without any hint of remorse.

It’s all very 80s, anti-authoritarian power fantasy (yes, Schaefer is a cop, but if you recall the maverick cops that were common in movies at the time, that anti-government streak makes sense), and it wraps up way too quickly and neatly for my liking too, with the creators having written themselves into a bit of a corner with the full on Yautja invasion.

It’s fun enough, and it is at least very well drawn too, with some nicely vivid, very bold colours that were typical in the era, albeit not in comics that weren’t by Marvel or DC.

I do remember being particularly enamoured with this series growing up, but it hasn’t aged particularly well.

Oh, and I found it interesting that this advert is on the inside back cover of Predator #4; I wonder if this cartoon will ever take off?
