After the Battle of Jakku, the former Rebellion are looking to organise and expand the New Republic, but a run-in with some very well equipped mercenaries, using some familiar equipment, is causing them some serious problems. Meanwhile, Han Solo is on a mission to investigate a mystery in a setting that he feels quite comfortable in, and ends up running into an ally who’ll be very familiar to readers of the Star Wars comics.
This was such a huge disappointment; there was a point where it was really exciting to plug in some gaps in the Star Wars saga with in-continuity, canon stories featuring Luke, Leia and Han. After a decade of stories of that nature, it feels as if there’s not much ground left to cover, and it certainly feels as though we could do with a break from the central trio.
The Star Wars universe is huge, but like the films, the mainline comics often make the mistake of making everything feel small, intimate and related. Not to mention, boring.
We know the fate of these characters, and we even know what happens in the wider universe too, so there’s very little dramatic tension here. Alex Segura’s script is bland and uninteresting, and Phil Not (despite being renowned for his excellent covers) even provides stiff-looking art with some dreadful ship designs.
It’s a big disappointment; not only is the story itself boring, but it’s also a new #1 to launch an entirely new main Star Wars series, yet follows directly on from the Battle of Jakku storyline, so new readers are likely to be pretty bewildered and bored. Still, all of the covers are nice, so that’s something I guess.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
