There’s an artful surrealism to the presentation of Wag; so much so that, given the cover and the pages preceding the comic’s story itself, it’s difficult to really anticipate what narrative you’ll find being told over the course of the issue.
Written by Scott Hoffman (aka Babydaddy, co-founder of the Scissor Sisters, no less), Wag is a post-apocalyptic tale, told from the perspective of a lone man (the titular Wag), who has an encounter with a group of dangerous intruders which totally upends his existence.
There’s plenty of subtle world building and exposition here, told in a way that immediately demands the reader’s attention; with the sullen voice of Wag, and his slightly odd way of thinking, delivering the tale to us, we flash back to his past and the present, as he leaves his current abode with an unexpected companion.
Juan Bobillo’s art seems to subtly cycle through a variety of colour schemes on each page, with detailed, distinctive and characterful line work as the basis; every now and then, something like a bird, for example, will stand out against the harshness of Wag’s reality. It’s really interesting as an artistic technique, and pairs well with Hoffman’s script.
By the end of this first issue, it looks like we’re embarking on a weird road trip with Wag and his new (and only) friend, and I’m really looking forward to the journey ahead.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
