I love to trawl through Comixology Originals titles and just check out series which I’ve never heard of, and then dive in with zero expectations whatsoever. A lot of the time you’ll find really high concept stuff, with truly intriguing setups, which struggle to stick the landing at the climax of the series. However, sometimes you find true gems that deserve a bit more of the spotlight than they’ve received.

Mistland certainly gets off to a very interesting start. Its settung seems rooted in Norse Mythology, concerning a society consisting of three clans, forced to share space within a subterranean city known as The Hollow.

Not only is there (supposedly) danger lurking outside The Hollow, but the awkward nature of three opposing clans being in such close proximity also seems to be full of tension and violence.

There’s a lot of great world building in this first issue, and it’s delivered fairly well organically too, without feeling as if it’s heavy-handed exposition. There’s even a short, storybook style sequence in which an important piece of The Hollow’s history is recounted, and the issue itself also ends on a pretty shocking cliffhanger.

Characters seem diverse and believable, with plenty going on amidst the slight chaos of The Hollow’s society.

It’s a solid start for sure, and with the intriguing cliffhanger, which hints at a devastating time jump, I guess we’ll see if this is another Comixology Originals title which ends up finishing in an unsatisfying way.
