Though it’s a #1 issue, perhaps confusingly Darkstalkers X Street Fighter: Dark Love #1 is part 2 of the Lords of the Makai crossover. Continuing the story which began in Darkstalkers X Street Fighter: Blood Throne, in Dark Love we see Cammy White and Charlie Nash teaming up to fight off the monsters now invading Chicago, which has been transported to the dimension of the Darkstalkers. With Cammy and Charlie somehow becoming, well, closer, other characters are not getting on quite so well.
Despite some well rendered action and the usual superb artwork overall, I’m finding this crossover to be a bit unsatisfying. Though it’s a crossover between two huge Capcom franchises, both of which have been adapted brilliantly by UDON in the last few decades, there’s a weird dearth of characters involved in the story, which doesn’t really seem to go anywhere over the course of this issue.
The title hints at a potential romantic angle for two characters, as does the standard cover (note, pictured is my copy of the comic, which doesn’t have those two characters locked in a kiss!), when this actually happens it comes out of nowhere, and at a bizarre point too. Though it happens again, it still seems quite out of place, and the justification for it seems odd too.
A fight scene later on seems kind of pointless too, and though we end on a cliffhanger, it does feel as if we haven’t got much further in terms of the overarching plot by the time that final page is reached.
Here’s hoping that things pick up in part 3, Rogues, which is due in December.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
