It’s taken me a really long time to get around to reading the first volume of Plants vs. Zombies, Dark Horse’s comic book adaptation of the popular video game series.
As it was released way back in 2011, which was still a few years after the first game was released, it’s worth noting that it features elements from the first game alone, as subsequent sequels and spin-offs (such as the Garden Warfare series) were yet to be released. Is it any good? Let’s find out.
Nate Timely doesn’t seem to be the brightest spark. Case in point: it takes him a while to notice that the bright, colourful suburban town of Neighborville has been invaded by zombies. However, along with Patrice, the niece of Neighborville’s eccentric inventor, Crazy Dave, Nate and the town’s plant life might be the best hope the town has of surviving the seemingly endless onslaught of the undead.
A family friendly take on the zombie apocalypse, just like the video games are, Plants vs. Zombies: Lawnmageddon isn’t exactly high on logic or much of a plot. Plants and other elements of the original tower defense game seem to be thrown in almost at random, and it’s not until quite a way into the comic that a proper threat appears for the main characters to focus on defeating.
Still, it’s all good natured fun, and despite the presence of zombies, it’s definitely suitable for all ages. The characters never really feel in any danger from the undead, and there’s not even any scenes I can recall where a plant is eaten by a zombie either.
The artwork is lovely, and does a fantastic job of bringing the video game characters to the page. Even the original characters fit right in with the ones that appear in the game, and everything is very colourful and action packed.
I do think that it’s perhaps best suited to younger fans of the game. Does it get better from here? Well, there’s a ridiculous number of volumes that follow this one, and given that I picked them all up digitally as part of a Humble Bundle offering earlier this year, you can bet that I’ll be finding out soon enough!
