It’s back! The plucky British sci-fi anthology comic, Quantum, has been MIA for a little while longer than expected, with lots of printing and distribution challenges to cope with.
Despite this, the comic is here (following a successful crowdfunding campaign, which I was happy to be a part of), and going strong, with a gorgeous Major Rakhana cover and the same quality content as we’ve always been able to rely on with Quantum.
In issue 12, the aforementioned Major’s current story arc comes to an end, in what feels like a slightly abrupt way. A big action sequence feels oddly truncated, nwith a journal entry papering over the gaps, and the strip finishes with a thread or two left dangling. Still, that leaves elements for the next story arc to pick up on, of course!
Westernoir goes even further back into the history of the Weird West, with a story featuring one of monster hunter Josiah Black’s predecessors. A one off tale of a confrontation with a troll, it’s most notable for a significant change in its aesthetic; a brighter, more colourful and stylised tone than the pesudo-realism the strip usually employs. It’s certainly interesting though, and I enjoyed the more angular, experimental feel of this one.
Space Banshee Exorcist is a more philosophical and downbeat tale than its campy, B-movie title would suggest, and this is an excellent chapter in what’s proving to be one of Quantum’s brightest spots recently.
Speaking of downbeat, The Very Strange Reappearance of Peter Thomson heads into very strange territory, with even the lead character pondering the morality of his decisions, following the latest twist to his unusual situation. It’s very compelling stuff, as always.
The usual excellent features, shining a well deserved spotlight on small press British comics, along with another one page chapter of Dave vs AI, round out this issue.
I’ve been on board since the beginning of Quantum’s run so far, and it’s always a joy to get a new issue. It’s a shame that I’ve not been able to find the last few so easily, and though the wait for issue 12 was a long one, it was well worth being patient for.
All good things, as they say, come to those who wait.
