Jason Aaron began his run on TMNT by focusing on a different turtle in each of the first four issues. It was a neat concept, executed really well, allowing us a much closer examination of each of the brothers and their mindsets than we usually see.

It also set up the conflicts that have run through the series, not just the big scale threats, but the more personal ones too.

After bringing them together against New York’s ‘finest’, in a series of action packed, thrilling clashes, the pace calmed somewhat, and the dramatic stakes rose as the siblings found themselves in court.

Here, in Aaron’s final issue, the brothers must stand united against a massive, physical threat, but in a frequently recurring theme, they must also overcome the rift that’s developed between each other.

It’s been a consistently excellent run, with the art of the second half of the series being brilliantly delivered by Juan Ferreryra (shout out to Joelle Jones, Rafael Albuquerque, Cliff Chiang, Chris Burnham and Darick Robertson for their excellent work on the first five issues too).

Aaron’s shown a real understanding and passion for the TMNT, with a great sense of what drives each of the brothers and makes them tick. He’s really put them through the wringer, particularly when it comes to poor Donnie and the sadly deceased Splinter.

That’s why this final issue feels so satisfying and so triumphant; he also leaves a very intriguing thread for incoming writer Gene Luen Yang to run with, while leaving the Turtles themselves in a more positive place than they’ve been for a while.

It looks like we’re going to be back to kicking some shell with the quartet in no time, and I’m totally here for it.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
