A perfect Halloween read, The Denim Devil short, Lacerate Outdoors, takes the titular, wannabe killer and drops him in the woods for some more slapstick shenanigans. Of course, this being the Denim Devil, those slapstick shenanigans do feature some gore, but not in the way the masked murderer would prefer.
Writers Zach Carter and Jared Yanez (the latter also on art and lettering) continue to somehow make the Denim Devil an endearingly useless idiot, somehow lovable despite his murderous intentions. I especially enjoyed his banter with Isaac, a deceased companion who he’s carrying around in the woods.
There’s some genuine laughs even with other characters here too (the bears are a highlight), and the short page count definitely leaves you wanting more.
Which brings me to the purpose of Lacerate Outdoors; it’s a free short (which you can read here) to celebrate the release of the collected edition of The Denim Devil Volume 1; long term readers of mine will know how big a fan I was of the slasher satire’s first volume, given that I read, reviewed and massively enjoyed each issue.
Though much darker in tone than the short form, black comedy of Lacerate Outdoors (and far bloodier), I found the first five issue story arc of The Denim Devil to be a hugely enjoyable, unpredictable read from start to finish. You can buy the collected volume from Amazon, or directly from the creators at November Street.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
