The cat is out of the bag, as of this issue of The Last Arship Starship (sorry, couldn’t resist!). James T. Kirk is back, resurrected by the Borg for reasons unknown. Now he’s aboard the last functioning ship in the possession of Starfleet, with the crew on a mission to save humanity from dying out in the wake of the galaxy-wide disaster, The Burn.
The first issue was absolutely brilliant stuff from start to finish, even though it didn’t seem like we needed Kirk in a newly post-Burn Trek story. That feeling carries across here; not only do we have no clue why Kirk is here, but neither do the crew or even Kirk himself. It can’t help but feel like a way to sell the comic, rather than any necessary plot point.
There’s a few weird inconsistencies in this issue too, such as Captain Sato being so confident of having responsibility for zero casualties while he’s in command (a claim immediately disproven by issue 1), or a fleet of enemy starships seemingly unaff by The Burn.
The art, however, remains superb; both the linework and colouring gives this series a real old school feel, and I really like it. There’s one early panel which seems awkwardly photo referenced, but it’s a fleeting issue and I didn’t notice that happening again.
I’m a little concerned by the fact that Kirk seems to be hijacking the story to take centre stage too, and while on point for the character (and William Shatner!), it doesn’t seem to be doing the comic any favours. We are only two issues in, but it’s a shame that the excitement I felt at the intriguing setup of the first issue seems to have been shot to smithereens by the following release.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
