One of the things I really enjoy about indie comics is the feeling that their existence is not due to commercial concerns, but instead from the burning desire of their creators to share their passion, creativity and art with the world.

That’s definitely the feeling that I got from Earth Dragons #1, the opening chapter of a story regarding a tribe which chooses to sit outside the modern world. The tribe’s spiritual leader has found insight into how they might embark on saving our seemingly doomed planet, and the help may be coming from a very unusual and unexpected source indeed.

I loved the way that Earth Dragons #1 felt like a tale being told around the campfire, with knowledge and wisdom being imparted to curious, eager faces all locked in on the guru sitting before them. Though the dialogue and sentiments about the damage being done by contemporary social, economic and military systems is a little blunt and on-the-nose, it does make sense to be so direct, when told from the point of view of a man imparting his insights to the youngsters in his village.

Writer Jon Portrey sets up a story which is very intriguing in this issue, though it is a bit of a shame that it does all feel like setup by the final page. That said, the tribal setting and the almost lecture-like talk given to the young people does require proper grounding, as do the somewhat otherworldly connections.which the guru has made.

The artwork is beautifully done, with Jean Pedroso using an appropriately earthy palette to tell the story.

I’m definitely keen to see where the series goes next after such an interesting opening issue, and I look forward to the more fantastical elements coming to the fore as the story progresses.

You can buy Earth Dragons #1 from Amazon. Many thanks to creator Jon Portrey for sending a digital copy of Earth Dragons #1 to me for review purposes.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
